our philosophy

We are a small design-oriented firm with international experience in retail, commercial, and residential work.  While we specialize in not specializing, we strive to design architecture with a small ‘a’, letting good ideas flow through to simple solutions, thoughtful spaces and materials that age well.  We strive for honesty and clarity. We strive to create architecture that responds to its context, its landscape, its owners and stakeholders.

Collaboration is key.  We work with enlightened clients and knowledgeable consultants. We provide modern solutions for residential, local retail and commercial, rural economy, master planning, historic preservation and adaptive reuse.

Our first job is to understand our client’s vision and needs. The work should be right-sized and well-designed. We support and foster knowledge of a particular Loudoun County and Mid-Atlantic American Agri-cultural rural and small-town vernacular.  We advocate for local well-crafted options with personality.  We make good architecture

about us

Before settling in Loudoun County, Matt worked with Ross Anderson and anderson architects in New York City for 21 years.

He was a project manager and designer for residential, retail and commercial projects throughout the US and internationally.  As a small firm senior associate he was a project manager, designer, graphics and marketing director, IT and HR manager, and chief mechanic.

anderson architects cultivated and evolved his love of architecture, honest design, materials that age well, the process, placemaking, and architecture that tells a story. Matt gained expertise in building permitting, navigating historic preservation guidelines, and adaptive reuse.  Matt’s projects at anderson architects were published, exhibited, and won numerous awards, including merit awards from AIA New York, AIA Columbus, the Chicago Athenium and the SARA National Design awards.

Matt obtained his Master of Architecture from Rice University in Houston, where he won the prestigious Fossi Traveling Fellowship for the best Thesis work of the year. Before that, Matt received his Bachelor’s Degree from Georgia Tech, where he also attended the Ecole D’Architecture Paris-Tolbiac in a one-year exchange program.

Matt grew up traveling the world in a military family, which has something to do with his love of architecture that tells stories. Matt is a LEED Accredited Professional, holds architecture licenses in New York and Virginia, and is an NCARB certificate holder. Matt lives on a Pony Farm in Airmont, VA with his Loudoun-raised writer wife, equestrian daughter, and prized bee colonies.
